Clif Bars On the Way

Now that I'm taking long training walks, it's important that I eat from time-to-time while I'm walking, not just at mealtimes with friends or with milkshake treats at the end of my walks. I have hard time eating while I'm walking because I tend to get an upset stomach pretty easily while I'm exercising. I think this has something to do with the fact that most of my blood is in my extremities rather than my stomach, and so digestion isn't as easy as when I'm sitting still.

Whatever the case, I've discovered that Clif Bars sit comfortably in my tummy, taste good, and better yet, are healthy. I just ordered a bunch of them (including flavors such as Cool Mint Chocolate and Carrot Cake), and they'll arrive in my mailbox in about a week, just in time for the long training walks of July. Let the walking and eating commence!

  1. Regarding digestion during exercise, I was just about right. According to Lance Armstrong's website, "Digestion is a process that takes place best while your body is at rest. While you are exercising, blood is diverted from your gastrointestinal tract to your muscles and lungs, impeding digestion. This often leads to GI problems during exercise."

  2. Yep, Gary told me this many years ago now and it's true. Clif Nectar bars have like only 3 ingredients and I found a bunch of gluten free options that tasted good.
